After medical qualification ,Dr. O Connell worked in Dublin and London teaching hospitals and obtained her Certification of Completion of Training in General Internal Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin and U.K.

She began her training in her chosen speciality of Dermatology In Dublin and London teaching hospitals.

Dr. O'Connell was then awarded a three year Fellowship in Dermatology in the Department of Dermatology in Stanford University Medical Centre , California,U.S.A.

Following these training programmes Dr. O'Connell was enrolled on the Irish Medical Council Specialist Register in Dermatology.
